Elahé Omidyar Mir-Djalali Professor of Persian Language
The School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies (MENAS) at the University of Arizona invites applications for a newly established endowed professorship in Persian language instruction. Thanks to a generous grant from the Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute, the Elahé Omidyar Mir-Djalali Professor of Persian Language will begin employment on August 1, 2018. This is a UA Career Track position. This new position is at the Assistant Professor Career Track level and begins with a renewable three-year appointment. The successful candidate will teach Persian language courses at all levels, and will have already proven her/himself to be an excellent and passionate instructor. This is a teaching-intensive position (3 courses, 13 credit hours/semester); the development and supervision of teaching assistants is also expected. The Elahé Omidyar Mir-Djalali Professor of Persian Language will assume the lead role in developing UA students’ fluency in Persian at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Opportunities for teaching courses in Persian literature, history and culture through MENAS and the newly created Roshan Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Persian and Iranian Studies may also exist. Native or near-native fluency in both Persian and English is required, along with demonstrated innovation in pedagogical design and use of technology in language learning. Experience teaching online or hybrid courses is an asset. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Persian language, applied linguistics, or literature, or a closely related field, and will have experience in second language teaching at the college level. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a willingness to participate actively in the development of Persian and Iranian studies in MENAS, in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the Roshan Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Persian and Iranian Studies, in the Graduate College. The position requires contributions to campus and off-campus service and outreach, student mentoring and advising, and enhancement of MENAS’s strong reputation for language teaching, learning, and research.
